This year marks our church’s 23rd year of hosting the Alternative Gift Market. Over the years, our congregation has raised $180,000, or over $8,000 each year, for critical national and international humanitarian projects focused on saving lives and preserving our planet. As savvy donors, it is reassuring to know that all projects selected are vetted annually by Alternative Gifts International, and 90% of the funds go directly to the projects. AGI has been given a 4-Star efficiency rating by Charity Navigator and meets all 20 standards for Charity Accountability.
For those who are not familiar with the market, instead of buying a traditional gift for loved ones, you donate an amount in their honor that supports a project, such as fresh-water wells in Sudan, training low-caste girls in India to sew and therefore support themselves, protecting coral reefs and sea turtles worldwide, or many other worthy causes that might align with their interests. You then select a card and receive an insert describing your contribution to give to the recipient.
You will have the satisfaction of knowing your gift made a difference in the world, being “green” in your giving, and pushing back against a consumer-driven holiday mentality. If these ideas resonate with you, check out the Alternative Gift Market held every Sunday from November 26 through December 24 in the Link.
